It would be fair to say that Katya first became interested in photography at the age of 9 or 10, while watching her father develop film and photographs in a home darkroom. Soon she was developing her own film and photographs and her older brother was teaching her some tricks of the trade to achieve special effects. At some point, however, Katya abandoned this new hobby and focused her attention on other things. Consequently, in the following years she did not consciously consider herself a photographer, but on certain occasions she would feel an inner need to capture a particular moment in time and would actually do so when there happened to be a camera handy at that particular moment. This need finally formed into a rather conscious desire, which resulted in her acquiring a semi-professional camera in 2008. Needless to say, Katya then began taking pictures of virtually everything that would catch her eye, things which usually remain unseen by most of us. She began working with various materials, substances and light to create ‘ephemeral paintings’ that she would then capture with the camera. These experiments are presented in the Abstract Photography collection (none of the images were created with Photoshop or other similar applications).
Apart from creating abstract artwork, Katya immensely enjoys photographing people at their ordinary activities.
